The Embankment is Five – Bedford Gastropub Marks Fifth Birthday in Style
1st April 2014: The Embankment in Bedford has marked five successful year’s trading with the award-winning independent pub company Peach at the helm with some special celebrations to thank guests for their support and commemorate five great years in the town.
Peach joint venture partner Andrew Coath and his team re-opened the property on 9th March 2009 after an eight week top-to-toe refurbishment which completely transformed the grand old riverside property. As well as breathing new life into the building, the refit revitalised the pub business itself and brought a great gastropub to Bedford.

“We’ve had a fantastic five years during which the pub has gone from strength to strength, earned some amazing accolades and been warmly embraced by locals,” says Andrew Coath from Peach. “With the support of guests, the community and the media, we’ve been able to grow the business every year, even throughout the recession, increasing turnover by six-fold and creating more than 30 new job opportunities in five years,” he says.
“It’s been a tough time for pubs, especially town centre ones and we wouldn’t have thrived without the support of our locals. I’d like to say a big thank you to all our guests for their continued support in the last five years and for being there for us. We’ve met some great people and done some great things with them,” he adds.
Andrew and his team from The Embankment, led by manager Jonathan Taylor, will be working hard to ensure The Embankment continues to thrive during the next five years, with new events and seasonal menus created by head chef Sam Collins keeping things exciting and fresh.
“We said when we re-opened five years ago that we wanted to bring something special to Bedford. We were heartened at the time by reactions from locals and ever since then by the loyalty of our guests, and we hope we can continue being a favourite place to meet, eat, drink, party and stay for many more years to come,” says Andrew.
